Day 5

1/6th of the Way There
Today I can say I am 1/6th of the way to my goal of bringing light and love to our wonderful world of Down syndrome. While I was at Scottish Rite Hospital today for Reagan's recasting I looked up and saw a group of new employees getting their tour of the hospital. When all of a sudden I caught the eye of a lovely young woman.....who has Down syndrome. That's right! This young lady with the blessing of a third 21st chromosome, who just not too long ago never would have had this chance, was in the middle of orientation for her job!! Ahhh I could not help but stare...Stare because I was picturing my children standing there in her shoes, listening as they learned about their duties. Yes, a tear came to my eyes and a smile to my heart. My life as a mom of soon to be 5 children with Down syndrome is not hard, I am not a special person, and my hands are not full the way most people see. My life is hard for the Lord, I am special in God's eyes and in my children's eyes, and my hands are only full of the blessings of ALL my children.

1. Ds Fact- Over 90% of pregnancies that may involve a child with Down syndrome are terminated. The National Down Syndrome Adoption Network is trying to change those statistics by educating families about the positive outcome of making an adoption plan. Families interested in adopting should contact the NDSAN through our web site atwww.ndsan.org. Consider adoption!!!

2. Handsome Heath

Heath

Boy, Born April 8, 2001 Heath is a sweet little boy who desperately needs a family.

Heath is a nine year old boy with Down Syndrome. He is tiny in stature. His feet hardly reach the edge of his shared wheelchair. Because of his age, he has already been transferred from the stimulating environment of his baby house to a dull and underfunded mental institute for boys ages 6-18. He is no longer the youngest boy in his group, but he is certainly among the smallest.

Heath is not a recent transfer. He has lived in the stifling boredom of institution life for a long time. He has lost the vivacity of life at the baby houses. In his three years at the institute, he has been given nothing of his own. He has not seen a book or a toy. He has never been gathered into anyone's loving arms. He is a very lonely little fellow in desperate need of love and comfort.

We have few other details on Heath. He has been seen in a wheelchair, so he may not be able to walk. We don’t know if or how well he talks, or any other details on his medical condition. We do know that he is a cute, chubby-cheeked, dirty and neglected lonely little lost boy who needs a mother more than almost anyone else in the world.

If you would like to learn more about Heath from a family who met him at his present institute, please follow these links:
